Redevelopment and Temple - History of Temple

History of Temple

The GHS building was officially opened on 25th August 1975 with the installation of Lord Krishna's shrine in the prayer hall. At this time the Centre was only the 3rd building in the UK with dedicated facilities for Hindu prayer. This fact attracted 3000 people from all over the UK attending the opening ceremony, which took place over two days. Due to the needs of the community the centre's activities were divided into two main areas, one part of the building served the communities religious needs, and the other part of the building was used for social and cultural activities. This bi-functionality of the building was recognised as being vital and integral to the well being of the community and perhaps recognises the interconnection between religion and culture. During 1975 a constitution was formed and papers were submitted to the charity commission for registration who accepted the societies application for charitable status (charity number 505959).
