At any given time, the Gujarat Hindu Society is engaged in a variety of projects designed to benefit the local community and to promote understanding between different cultures.
Gujarati Language Teaching
Gujarati teaching began at the GHS in 1965. Children are taught Gujarati,
which is the mother tongue of the majority of the Society’s members,
once a week over 45 sessions per year. Children are admitted to the class
at the age of 7 and study for approximately 5 to 6 years. They are able
to sit the Gujarati GCSE examination at the Centre, which is a registered
examination centre. Teachers are all volunteers who are paid a small remuneration
for their time. The Centre provides a modern classroom environment and
there will typically be 200 plus students taking part in classes.
Lancashire BME Pact
The
GHS was a founder member of the Lancashire
BME Pact and today, it plays an important role in driving the organisation
forward. The BME Pact was formed to enable voluntary groups to come together
to share best practice and to provide a voice for local BME communities.
Its overall aim is to ensure that local communities contribute to, and
benefit from, the regeneration process and community cohesion agendas
by enabling them to engage, inform and participate in the changes that
are taking place locally and regionally.
